Starlink to Launch Direct-to-Cell Service in Ukraine
KYIV, Ukraine – In a significant step towards enhancing mobile connectivity, Ukraine’s largest mobile operator, Kyivstar, has inked a deal with Elon Musk’s Starlink to introduce direct-to-cell satellite services, according to an announcement made by VEON, Kyivstar’s parent company, on Monday (Dec 30).
This innovative technology allows for direct communication between smartphones and satellites, bypassing traditional terrestrial infrastructure. This move positions Ukraine as one of the pioneering nations globally to adopt Starlink’s revolutionary direct-to-cell service.
According to the joint statement from Kyivstar and Starlink, the service, which will initially offer messaging capabilities, is expected to be fully operational by the last quarter of 2025.
Starlink, known for providing vital internet services to both civilians and the military in Ukraine amidst ongoing conflicts, has already begun deploying satellites equipped with direct-to-cell technology earlier this year. This partnership could potentially provide a robust communication network, offering resilience against disruptions caused by warfare.
This collaboration not only promises to elevate Ukraine’s telecommunications landscape but also underscores the growing role of satellite technology in ensuring connectivity in regions where traditional infrastructure might be compromised.
