Houston Area Hit by Multiple Tornadoes: One Death and Widespread Damage Reported

Houston, TX — A series of tornadoes swept through the Greater Houston metropolitan area on Saturday afternoon, leaving a trail of destruction and claiming at least one life. The National Weather Service reported several tornado touchdowns, particularly affecting regions both north and south of Houston.

North of the city, communities like Katy, Cypress, Porter Heights, and Splendora bore the brunt of the storm’s fury, with reports confirming tornado activity. South of Houston, the tornado’s path led to the destruction of several homes in areas between Alvin and Liverpool. Madison Polston of the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office confirmed one fatality in Liverpool, with four others sustaining non-critical injuries. The damage assessment is ongoing, with at least 10 homes known to be affected in Brazoria County.

In Montgomery County, just north of Houston, Deputy Chief of Staff Jason Smith reported significant property damage, with estimates suggesting 50 to 100 homes impacted. The storm’s force brought down trees and power lines, and at least two individuals were hospitalized, although no critical injuries were reported.

The impact extended to mobile homes in Katy and Porter Heights, where a fire station also suffered structural damage with its doors being blown in. The National Weather Service described one of the tornadoes near Stowell in Chambers County as “large and extremely dangerous.”The severe weather disrupted air travel, causing significant delays at Houston’s Bush Intercontinental and Hobby airports. Delays surpassed one hour, as noted by FlightAware, due to the ongoing storm activity.

This event follows a pattern of severe weather across the U.S. during the holiday period, with similar disruptions reported earlier in the week at Dallas-Fort Worth International and Dallas Love Field airports due to intense thunderstorms.

Officials are continuing to assess the full extent of the damage as recovery efforts begin in the affected areas.
