Hippo Hooray: Help Name the Adorable Newborn Pygmy Hippo Just in Time for the Holidays!
The Metro Richmond Zoo is bursting with joy as they announce the arrival of a precious baby pygmy hippopotamus, born on December 9, 2024, delighting all just in time for the holiday season. This little girl, the third offspring for proud parents Iris and Corwin, has already captured hearts with her adorable antics.
In a festive twist, the zoo shared a video of the calf frolicking with her mother, set to the tune of “I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas,” making this baby hippo the perfect holiday surprise. “Most people don’t get a hippopotamus for Christmas at all, so we feel lucky to have received two over the years,” the zoo humorously noted.
Adding to the excitement, this birth was Iris’s first water delivery, a rare and special event for pygmy hippos who can give birth both on land and in water. The baby, who was already swimming around like a pro, weighed in at a healthy 15 pounds and is expected to grow to an impressive 600 pounds.
The community is invited to join in the fun by participating in a naming contest for this festive newcomer. With options like Poppy, Juniper, Hammie Mae, and Omi, each name carries a charming story or connection. Poppy honors her mother’s floral name, Juniper nods to her winter arrival, Hammie Mae links to Virginia’s ham tradition, and Omi means “water” in Yoruba, celebrating her aquatic debut.
The voting has sparked an overwhelming response with over 14,000 votes in just the first day, showing how much this little hippo has already touched the hearts of people worldwide. The poll closes on December 31 at 2 p.m., with the winning name to be announced on New Year’s Day, promising a wonderful start to 2025 for this hippo family and their fans.
